More learning from my 30 day challenge

31/5/2015

I am noticing that mentally I am finding less and less resistance to just showing up to write my blog.  Because I know have a history of having made posts I know it is something that I am capable of, and it is a case of just showing up and doing it.  That has shown me all least two things.   Firstly, the more you do something that you have been procrastinating about, the easier it seems to get and secondly, when you realise that you can effect change by making a small daily commitment to yourself for 30 days you become flooded with ideas around other 30 day challenges that you can take on, and what else is possible.

Here are some of my other possibilities, or as I would like to think options for my future 30 day challenges

  • A daily Random Act of Kindness
  • Dance like nobody is watching for 5 minutes daily
  • Cook something seasonal daily
  • Do one creative thing each day
  • Declutter - one item or one area per day
  • Find inspiration and capture the moment
  • 10,000 steps each day
  • Connect with family or a friend
  • TV free
  • Complete projects - a strong finish

Most of these ideas come out of something that I have been wanting more of, or something I have been wanting to let go of.

I have a quote on my laptop that I put on a few years ago - "small steps lead to big progress", which sums up that second insight nicely.

I am not going to take on a another challenge just yet.  I have decided that I am going to see this challenge through to the end before committing to my next one.  I am naturally a good starter and I want to strengthen my capability around having a strong finish.

Life's Simple Pleasures

I am very blessed in life for many reasons.  I have people in my life that I love and that love me in return, I love what I do and I am making a positive difference.  All of these things are important to me and underpin my life.    I also love the moments when I stop, reflect and feel really grateful for the simple pleasures in my life.  With the changing of the seasons it helps me notice and appreciate those small things.  I love the variety that exists as a result of different seasons. Having lived in the tropics for several years, I prefer to have 4 seasons rather than a fairly consistent 30 degrees all year.

Here are some of the simple things, that I experienced today that gave me that inner smile or warm fuzzy feeling.  You will have your own.

  • my morning cup of tea in bed, with my morning pages and the fur family
  • a bowl of warming, home made roasted pumpkin soup.  Making a big pot of soup is one of my soul soothing past times.  I love to make soup, and I have to say I am pretty darn good at it.
  • a good hot soak in the bath with Epsom Salts after my horse riding lesson - bliss

They might be simple things but they feed my soul and recharge my battery.

What are your simple pleasures?

What I have learnt so far

What I have learnt so far about my posting blogs

Firstly, I totally forgot last night.  I didn't resist, it wasn't a case of couldn't be bothered, I just plain and simple forgot.   I only remembered this morning when I was thinking about something that I thought I might write about.   I got off my telecall last night, had dinner, watched Poldark and went to bed. When I realised I felt disappointed and then guilty, and then I thought I simply forgot, so I let go the guilt and got on with my day.    It's not the end of the world.  It is how I respond from here that matters.  So here I am again.  I could easily have thought now I can't be bothered as I have already missed one. I have to say it was very tempting, but no I am here to see it out.

Anyway, here are some of my learnings
  • I have mostly been doing it at night before bed, but think I will be fresher and more inspired if I do it in the morning, after my morning pages and cup of tea
  • I want the posts to be personal and authentic, and hope they will be inspirational, thought provoking or insightful to others
  • I don't know that I love my laptop enough, or routine enough to want to do daily posts, but posts 2 or 3 times a week or even once a week would probably work for me.
  • Posts can be sharing something from life, leadership or something that inspires me personally
  • It is probably best to keep it simple, and only one key message per post.   I don't always find that easy, as I love to connect dots and my mind is like a butterfly flitting from one thing to the next.
  • I can post photos, u tube clips, links to other cool stuff and inspirational quotes.
  • I can share things that I notice I am sharing with clients that they find useful
  • You may also have realised that I love to ask questions of myself, and of you
  • I should also use spell check

That's all from me just now, it's minus 4 degrees tonight. I have my hot water bottle and I am now going to enjoy 10 minutes reading Terry Pratchett.  He is a favourite in our household.

Be the Change

This quote came up in a coaching session today.  It is one that I have referred to a number of times but still inspires me when I think about it and the importance of self leadership and leading from where you are.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world"

Mahatma Gandhi

I would like to see more love, compassion and oneness in the world.

So my challenge is to be that.

What would you like to see more of in the world ?

The power of daily intention

One simple way to be proactive in creating your life is to be clear about your intention for the day.

Setting your intention "primes" your brain to look for opportunities to fulfil this intention.  I have also found it has lead me to some wonderful synchronicity.

One of my favourites has been  - "Today I will have experiences that support me to live a happy, sustainable and fulfilling life"

What is your intention for the day?

Celebrating one week of posting

I have been posting my blog every day for a week now, and that is a milestone that I would like to celebrate.  It is so important to celebrate the milestones along the journey.  I am very pleased with myself for sticking to this commitment, even when I really didn't want to turn on my computer and write.  It was not the writing that I was not looking forward to, more the fact that I have to turn on my laptop.  For me, my laptop is work.  I am enjoy being tech free, there is a sense of freedom that I have.  I could go tech free for days quite happily, and in fact I do.
I am curious about how I think about my relationship with technology, I see it as a bind, and would prefer to see it as a tool to create freedom.  Anyway, that is something to explore for another day.

Enjoying local, seasonal food

I love good food and enjoy eating locally and seasonally.   So I am very blessed to be able to shop at my local Oxford Farmers Market on a Sunday morning, to be able to buy local organic fruit and veg, free range eggs, small goods and locally made cheeses.  We having been supporting the Farmers Market since it first started, it must be 5 years at least.  For the last 2 years or more we have bought Raw Milk (fresh the same day from the cows) from Village Milk in Oxford, which is less than 1 km down the road.  I plan to make my own cheese, just have to find a weekend or evening to enjoy the process.  Our freezer is stocked with 1/2 cow and a sheep which a friend reared, so we know they had a good life and low food miles.    I also grow a few vegetables and herbs in my kitchen garden.  I would like to grow more someday and be self sustaining.

I love to cook from scratch, and in winter often have a big pot of soup or stew cooking.   Both my Mum and Nana taught me to cook good food, with English, German and Indian influences.   I learnt a lot about being resourceful, using up the leftovers and making the most of cheaper cuts of meat.    All basis skills but ones that I have really valued and call on regularly. I still get a great amount of pleasure from cooking a good meal and sharing it, particularly knowing that most of the ingredients were grown close by.

Although I haven't done any preserving this year, I have made my own jams, chutneys and cordials in years gone by which we are still enjoying.   I have just finished my last bottle of homemade Gooseberry and Lime cordial, which was a real treat served hot on a cold day.   That reminds me, it must be time to pick the Rose-hips as we had a frost this morning.  They make a fabulous cordial which is packed with Vitamin C, so great for boosting your immunity in winter.

Letting go..

21/5/2015

Today I let go of any expectations I had on myself, and allowed myself a day of being.  Friday is normally my work from home, admin and accounts day.  It is the day I do my preparation and planning for the weeks and months ahead. It's also my catch up day for filing, friends and any unanswered emails.  Often when I have time I get up to date on the housework ready for the weekend.   I love going into the weekend with the washing done. Today it was none of those things, well I did do some washing and tidying up around the house.  But I made the conscious choice to put work on hold for 24 hours, it was purely a day of being.  This is part of my self care and wellness program.  It is important to look after myself, as I am my business.

If I get sick, which I don't often do, or if my energy levels drop, I know myself and often what I need to do is just stop and be, and to get plenty of sleep.  No rushing, no expectations.

I am happy to make tomorrow, Saturday, my day of doing, as I am sure that by then I will be feeling refreshed and energised.   I am fortunate that I have that flexibility being self employed and apart from the "fur whanua" no dependents.

It is useful to know when to push yourself further and when to let go.  When was the last time you "Let go and just be" , if only for an hour or so.

Dreams

21/5/2015

I was thinking about what do I want my next 10 years to be about.  So the question that I asked myself was "What were my aspirational dreams?"  Where my thinking started was with what do I love or what have been long held dreams or ambitions.  I still have more to think about and I might even refine the list but a couple of things that are on there for me are
  • Ride (horse) around New Zealand (this is an expansion on my childhood goal to ride around Britain), and I have adapted to that to my circumstances and how I would like to do that now.  Namely, I want to do horse treks all around New Zealand.  So this is now more a figurative than literal goal.  But none the less a goal that inspires me and is still achievable.  I think in a 3 - 5 year time frame as this is about enjoyment and experience, rather than pushing myself physically to do it in a certain timeframe.
  • See the Aurora Borealis or "The Northern Lights".   Again this is a long held dream of mine.
  • Write a book, a personal development book to be more specific, probably around Authentic Living.  The Artist Way by Jane Cameron was a book that changed my life, and the reason I changed professions and became a Life Coach.  I would love to create a book that had that capacity to enhance someone else's life or if I am truly honest to create something that could be a catalyst for transformation.

Well I think that is enough declaration to the Universe for one day

What are your dreams?  Go on explore them a little more, you never know where it will take you......
